The science behind tapping

“Bond University in Australia replicated Dawson Church’s 2012 cortisol study in 2019; the result has been published in a mainstream American Psychological Association journal which is a huge coup for the field.

The only change that was made to the original individually delivered trial was to offer it in groups instead : a 43% reduction in cortisol was achieved in 1 hour of EFT (the original trial found a 24% reduction offering it individually).”

It is the result of our nervous systems being overwhelmed by experiences that we are unable to tolerate and process.

The role of the amygdala

The amygdala is a component of the limbic brain that is responsible for detecting fear and preparing for emergency events. It plays an important role in emotion and behaviour.  The amygdala has become best known for its role in fear processing.

When we are exposed to a fearful stimulus, information about that stimulus is immediately sent to the amygdala, which can then send signals to areas of the brain like the hypothalamus to trigger a “fight-or-flight” response (e.g. increased heart rate and respiration to prepare for action).

This almond-like shape is triggered by any memory of the past and also lives in the present: it cannot distinguish between past, present or future moments.

To see in the video the role of the amygdala and how it influences our emotions, see the video below.

It can be re-triggered easily by any aspect reminding of a past event. This is why a person being bitten by a dog would start for example being scared of all dogs.
